Margaret Thatcher: “No, No, No”

“Yes, the Commission does want to increase its powers. Yes, it is a non-elected body and I do not want the Commission to increase its powers at the expense of the House, so of course we are differing. Of course... the President of the Commission, Mr. Delors, said at a press conference the other day that he wanted the European Parliament to be the democratic body of the Community, he wanted the Commission to be the Executive and he wanted the Council of Ministers to be the Senate. No, no, no

Recycling CO2 might be possible in the future

While the question of CO2-emissions becomes increasingly worrying for most members of society, the answer from many government officials sounds dim. As of now, the reduction of pollution with the greenhouse gas is only dealt with through advocacy of lower consumption: we institute daylight saving times, No Car days or ban plastic bags. Whether or not we agree with these measures, they are undoubtedly inconvenient.

Going to Jamaica — After the German elections

On sunday, Germany elected a new Bundestag, the German Parliament. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative CDU (and its bavarian sibling CSU)  won most seats but suffered heavy losses compared to the last elections in 2013. The social-democratic SPD under former EU Parliament speaker Martin Schulz had the worst result since the Federal Republic of Germany has existed. The Greens and the socialist Left party performed better than expected.

"Everyone needs a coach"

If we'd have to think about Irish stereotypes, we'd find quite a few. Rob Duffy gets quite a few off our checklist pretty much from his first impression. The name, the spectacularly ginger beard, and the thick accent, all make Rob the perfect Irish man. One of the most striking stereotypes, namely the jolliness of our green and orange fellows, is perfectly embodied in this 37 year-old life coach.

I went to a 'Stop Brexit' march. This is what happened.

Last Wednesday, I purposefully moved into the lion's den. As someone who is used to ask all the tough questions about the EU,I expected to manifestly throw myself into quite an adventure when I decided to cover a 'Stop Brexit' march in Luxembourg-City. Little did I know that the excitement to stop this democratic vote wasn't all that large. Upon arrival, the first people who arrived weren't even organisers, which made that at 4.00 pm, when the march was supposed to start, you had just as many journalists present as there were protesters.
